Three of Mowat’s early books created a sensation across North America with their evocative accounts of his two years with a remote Inuit community.īut in his article, Goddard makes a detailed effort to prove that Mowat did not conduct all the research he describes in his books ``Never Cry Wolf,″ ``People of the Deer,″ and ``The Desperate People.″ His publishers estimate that at least 14 million copies of the books have been sold in at least 35 languages. ![]() In all, Mowat has published 26 books, including an award-winning children’s novel and several works about Arctic explorers. ``My publishers and I were led to believe that Saturday Night had commissioned an article which would amount to a general assessment of my writing career,″ Mowat writes. He accused Goddard of ``character assassination″ and says the magazine Saturday Night refused to carry his reply alongside the article. Mowat, 74, responded Monday with an angry statement carried by the Toronto Globe and Mail. ![]() But he says a study of Mowat’s private journals reveals instances where Mowat exaggerates and distorts the amount and kind of research he did on his Arctic trips in 19.
